BitTitan MigrationWiz vs. Microsoft Cross-Tenant Mailbox Migration

MigrationWiz was born to migrate mailboxes. That was more than a decade ago, so naturally we’ve grown up to be much more than a one trick pony. As a company dedicated to moving data smoothly, securely, and completely, BitTitan has licenses to handle a wide variety of workloads in nearly any environment. But we still migrate a whole lot of mailboxes.

MigrationWiz isn’t the only tool available for mailbox migrations. Recently we’ve been analyzing what Microsoft has to offer, including their cross-tenant mailbox migration tool. We wanted to understand the features, benefits, and drawbacks to make sure MigrationWiz continues to have everything our customers are looking for.

It can be tempting want to try a migration solution that appears custom-built for a specific environment. Especially when the project involves a single, “simple” workload like mailboxes. That’s why we put both MigrationWiz and the Microsoft cross-tenant mailbox migration tool to the test in order to provide customers with a side-by-side comparison. We found clear differences that can help you decide which tool will provide the most reliable and efficient migration. We did a similar analysis of Microsoft’s tool for OneDrive migrations.

It’s only mailboxes, right?

The first thing to keep in mind is that Microsoft’s tool is currently in public preview mode, so it should not be considered ready for enterprise migration projects. Other limitations include no user interface, poor scalability, and minimal features for reporting or project management. MigrationWiz has flexible features built in, so your IT team doesn’t have to spend their time on PowerShell scripting – that’s assuming you have that expertise in-house. MigrationWiz does the work for you and provides crisp reports that eliminate the need for customized scripts and spreadsheets.

When you have to execute a migration, users want to trust that all their communications will be intact when they log into the new environment. With Microsoft’s tool only user-visible content is migrated, then the Source mailbox is deleted. That means there’s no going back. MigrationWiz supports all migration workloads including mailboxes, archives, public folders, files, folders, and private chats. Shared workloads like Office 365 groups, Teams, and SharePoint document libraries are also supported. Plus, it’s easy to reverse the migration if something doesn’t look right.

Same price doesn’t equal same value

It’s curious that Microsoft is charging $15 per user – the same price as MigrationWiz – despite their tool’s limitations on speed, data volume, options, and ease of use. MigrationWiz also includes DeploymentPro for automated Outlook configuration; a feature that will have to be done manually if you choose the Microsoft migration tool.

And it almost goes without saying that the Microsoft tool only works when migrating to and from Microsoft environments. MigrationWiz is used to migrate to, from, and between cloud tenants on a variety of platforms. And, as a Microsoft Gold partner, BitTitan works hard to make sure MigrationWiz supports Microsoft customers of every size and dimension.
