New Active Directory Migration Tool for MigrationWiz

A new Active Directory Project is now available for general use inside MigrationWiz for those preparing a M365 migration. The project itself is set up in the normal way, using the ‘Create Project’ option inside MigrationWiz and the steps are similar to other migration project types.

Making it Easy to Move AD Objects

This new MigrationWiz project type will help you migrate Active Directory (AD) objects from one on-premises environment to another without the need for a network connection between them. The new AD tool provides an easy way to copy user and group objects from a source AD to a target AD, with the purpose of provisioning these objects in a Microsoft 365 tenant. As with all MigrationWiz projects, this tool is SaaS-based, with the migration being triggered from your cloud console using agents on both the source and target/destination environments.

How AD Migration Works

BitTitan created the Active Directory tool to support tenant-to-tenant migration projects that require the presence of target identities that are already set up to receive data. In a mailbox scenario, for example, user objects need to exist and have accessible Exchange Online mailboxes configured and ready to receive data. As a large number of target environments have their identities residing in a local Active Directory environment and are using the Azure AD Sync option to provision accounts in the cloud, local AD objects need to be created.

This new feature allows you to select objects from the source AD environment and quickly provision them in the target AD environment. These are then picked up by the Azure AD Sync and cloud accounts are provisioned accordingly so they’re ready to receive mail data from MigrationWiz. This makes the creation and provisioning of the target much simpler than it used to be.

Full AD Coexistence is on the Horizon

Currently the Active Directory migration tool is designed for pick-up and drop-off of user/group objects from source to target, providing easy provisioning for these accounts. It doesn’t currently migrate things like SIDHistory, which means it can’t be used as a full Active Directory coexistence tool for the purposes of a true on-premises coexistence project. That functionality is in the works, but for now the emphasis is on getting these objects copied to the target, making provisioning in the target cloud much simpler than before.

Fast Target Provisioning

If you’re working on a project where the source and target identities are provisioned with the help of Azure AD Sync (either AD Connect or AD Cloud Connect), you can now easily copy objects from the source to target. This new tool will recreate entire Organizational Unit (OU) structures in the target AD based on the layout of the source. The whole process is surprisingly fast, and it includes the added functionality of being able to copy the project structure into a normal MigrationWiz mailbox/OneDrive project, too.
